My new happy place

I'm still unpacking but moving here has been a game changer! Been here for two nights and I've slept of 8 hours each night, that hasn't happened in years! I'm typing this sitting at my kitchen table (haven't had one of those in a long time) looking out into my backyard. The yard is a little  untidy now but I've been given free range to get it back into shape. There are song birds coming into the yard, which is also a plus.

With all the rain we've had the past few days, I haven't been able to get my garden things out of my old place. I didn't want to deal with getting my car all wet and muddy. Hopefully today I can get the bulk of it done. Now fingers crossed I get my deposit back!

The Unboxing and my new fur baby

Posey enjoying a banana treat
The big move is over finally over which means the HUGE stack of boxes have to be unpacked. Even with all the downsizing I've done over the years, I can't believe how much I still have! I decided to keep the big sectional sofa that was in the ADU because of Posey the resident chocolate lab. It's way bigger than I need but it works for her. There's also a big glass coffee table (5'X5') that weighs a ton. It's so heavy that I can't move it. It's been years since I've had a coffee table but having any flat surface is a plus in my world. Of course right now it has boxes stacked all over it. :) One of the last things I packed was my silverware, which I can't find. Makes it a little challenging when I want to eat my yogurt. :)  If Posey is in the backyard she will escort me to my front door and start looking for treats. Today I gave her some frozen banana in a Kong ball. Looks like I will need to get some fresh peanut butter!

The Big move and good luck omen

Yesterday was the BIG move day into my new place. I've been searching for the past 6 months but also patiently waiting for this place to open up. It's been a little stressful to say the least! I purposely packed up everything I could in small moving boxes so I could move them myself. Not knowing if I would have put everything into storage if I couldn't find a place.  For the things I couldn't move (bed, hutch, tables) I scheduled my moving guy Matt. He's moved me so many times he feels like family. :)

So why the picture? In my small backyard I had several large plastic tub. There were all these dropping on them (think black sesame seed size) so I washed everything down a few weeks ago and sanitized them. I didn't think it was mouse dropping but I wanted to make sure everything was super cleaned. So during the move I had to get the bbq and patio table ready for Matt. I saw the dropping again and knew it couldn't be rodents. The tubs were out in the open and way too many droppings for a mouse to do in just a few weeks. I finally looked up and saw a nest and understood why the hummingbird was so aggressive when I was back there. I had to let my landlord know I couldn't take down the gazebo tent or lights because of the nest. Luck for me he agreed I could leave it until the hummingbird was done with it.  At my parent's house many years ago now, they had a lemon tree trellis (my dad training it to be flat against the house) outside the kitchen window.  Every year a hummingbird would build a nest there. I like to think this is a good omen but even if it isn't, it makes me smile.

Hand Carved Figures - MaxSold

Did I really need to buy these? No, but they came up for auction on MaxSold this week and I got them for only $7. Yes, I will flip them.

What caught my eye was the birds sitting on their heads, which I'm sure has some symbolic meaning. The woman is holding a baby or doll, guessing that's a sign of fertility. The man is holding what I can only guess is corn.  The pair turned out to be bigger than I thought because I didn't read the fine print. About 12" tall. Can't get any comps on these as they were hand carved, probably from some where in South America.

Manifesting a new home

I picked up this door mat a few months ago, manifesting that I would put it in front of my new place. Didn't know where or when that was going to be.
I'm getting to slowly move my stuff in, my official move in date is April 1. The place has a few more things that need to be fixed. One of the first things I did was put down this door mat!  think is looks good! :)
I purposely pack what I could in small boxes that I could lift myself. At the time, eight months ago I had no idea if I would be able to find a place or have to put everything into storage. Being able to move most of my stuff myself was important. I'm taking a couple a car loads over every day this week before the movers come for the big stuff. Since I have a lot of time, I count moving the boxing as my daily work out. :) Good thing I drive a big car!

Vintage Cook's Illustrated Magazines.

As a cookbook fan, I hit the mother lode of cooking magazines. Years ago I had a subscription to Cook's Illustrated  and loved it. What was great about the magazine was it didn't have any ads and the cooking tools or products they recommend were not sponsors. Always felt that I could trust what they were saying. Since Christopher Kimball left the company you could see the change. Sponsors products were being featured, so you had no way of knowing if their endorsements were legit or not. I also like the artwork for the covers on the older magazines.
Now these older vintage magazines when Chris was in charge have no resell value (regardless of what people tell you) so at the store they're given away. I'm currently cat sitting so I have over 60 magazines to go through! Yes, I'm a happy camper!

Manifestation

On my last walk on the beach I was still looking for hag stones. I found this one on my way back to the stairs. Hag stones aren't easy to spot so I'm hopeful my manifesting is working. :) Looking for something also keeps your mind focus on something and not turning inwards with negative thoughts. It was hard to say good-bye to the house, it's been my sanctuary for so many years. It would be wonderful to own the house but that would be one huge manifestation!
Update - I'm currently cat sitting so I have access to wifi so I can post. I'm actively packing for my big move next week! So excited to be in what I hope will be my happy place!

Milk Street Cookbooks

Yes, I picked up a few more cookbooks. I'm a big fan of Milk Street so when I came across these cookbooks for just $5, I had to get them! One of the books is a recent one too - 2024!

I stopped by one of my favorite thrift book store here in Carmel  one last time. I was hoping I would find a book on Sashkio stitching which I'm planning on learning to do. I have a lot of denim shirts which need a little TLC, great to practice on. The Japanese textile book (32 year old art exhibition in Seattle) gives the history behind Sashkio but more importantly inspirational photos of garments I would love to sew. Really I hope to find garments to alter while thrifting because my sewing skills are just basic.

Things I didn't get when out picking

Went to the Last Chance thrift store this morning before the storm hit. It's not a place I expect to find anything but when I'm super bored I make the drive. There is a section in the store that has a warning sign things are priced high. I spotted this Japanese Soma-Yaki punch bowl. I'm a fan of this style and I didn't know they even made a punch bowl. It's   famous for their tea cup sets. Priced at $55, I had to do the comps. There are several on eBay but none have sold, that's not a good sign. That also tells me that whoever is pricing things is just looking at listing and not the actual sold comps. I know the pottery kilns were shut down for various reasons (earthquakes, nuclear power plant, tidal waves) so these haven't been in production for a long time now. It's unique enough for me to think about it but knowing I couldn't resell it for even a small profit, I had to pass. :(
There were some artwork pieces I liked but I had to also pass for lack of wall space. The child like drawing of a cricket made me smile (don't ask me why) so it almost made it into my cart.

Priced at $125

The Window

The whole "when a door closes a window opens" moment. My window is that I finally got word that my move in date to my new place is April 1st! I've been waiting for months for this place (long divorce battle, theirs not mine) to be open to rent. Yes, I put all my eggs in one basket waiting for this place. My psychic friend told me it would happen and wanting to believe her, I just waited. Living with everything boxed up hasn't been mentally fun but I kept my eye on the end goal.
Now why the picture. While down here at the beach house the Joining Hands thrift store has these amazing leather chairs. I love the color, the feel and it's amazingly very clean. There are two but I only really need one. I've been looking for a comfortable reading chair as I'm not really a sofa type of person. I'm doing a pros and cons list because the price is $325.00 each. Not a bad price but do I really need it? I like to think of it as a sign it should be added to my new place. :)
Update - they have already sold :(

When a door close a window opens

We'v
e all heard the saying "when a door closes a window opens".  I was told that the Carmel house will be sold at some point next year. The cost of keeping this very old house is just too much for my friends.  Many, many things have to be repaired or replaces so they decided it was best to sell.  One of the requests her mother made before she passed away was to open the home to people who wanted to walk the beach but couldn't afford staying at the hotels. Her daughter (my friend) did that for almost 30 years. It's been a sanctuary for me, a place to recharge and find peace. Happy that my grandsons got to experience the beach house. One of the few regrets I have in life is that we didn't buy the house when my friend first inherited it back in 1993. It would have been a huge stretch for a us to do that but I knew it wasn't the right move for them. Now it's a running joke that we should once again try and buy it. I listened to a podcast about manifesting what you want. One of the small steps is to look for hearts everyday. It's just to get your mind to focus on something. So I decided to not only look for hearts but to also look for the hard to find hag stones. This may be my last time here at the house unless I can manifest a few million dollars in the next year. The photo is what I found on  my beach walk last night. I haven't found a hag stone in a long time so I was thrilled when it popped up. Maybe there is hope I'll be able to buy the house!

Just love a super size tote bag.

Thrift stores get a lot of dirty and unusable junk. Sorting out all of that does take time as well as disposing of it. Most of my volunteer time is spent getting rid of the junk.

While I was talking to the handbag volunteer she tossed this over sized canvas tote in the "go away pile". I asked why and she said it was too dirty to try and sell.  It was very dirty, especially the handles. I liked it because it was oversized and thought I should up grade from using Costco or Ikea plastic totes.  I take my bedding with me whenever I go to the beach house so that takes a really large bag. Since I have access to a large washing machine while at my friend's house I gave it a deep clean. I think after three washes it came out pretty good. Doesn't look grungy any more and better than my Costco bag.

Paper Quilling

6x6 cards and frame
There is a stationary store in Pacific Grove called the Quill. I always try to stop by and check out their displays and cards. This line of paper quilling cards are so impressive!  I can only manage a hedge hog when I've done paper quilling. :)  I picked up this one because when the town is known for their monarch butterfly park and it was some place I visited with the boys. I've been waiting for a square frame to come into the store and I got lucky once again. Fits perfectly and the black frame really sets off the butterfly.

Share a little kindness

I don't do a lot of shopping on Amazon but friends keep giving me GC. I know there is a boycott with Amazon and I support it but I do want to use up my GC.  It's been hard as there isn't anything I really need or willing to spend twice as much for.

A few years back I dropped something off at a friend's house and she had a cooler filled with bottled water for anyone delivering packages to her house. It was during the summer when it can get super hot. I always liked that idea so I finally got to do it this week. While at my friend's house it was safe to leave things out by the front door. They ask that all their packages be left by the front door and not their mailbox which is at the bottom of a very long driveway. If the driver can't get their trucks up the narrow driveway, then they have to hike up the hill. All the stars were alined, I had the drinks, an Amazon order coming and a box to put everything in.

Now the challenge is to use up that GC.

Dress Form

This weekend we took in 3 estates in less than 2 hours. That was a whole lot of stuff!
One of the estates was from a single professional woman who wore very stylist suits. No boring black or grey but colorful mixed textured prints.
She must have tailored her suits because this was her dress form.  Yes she was a tiny woman, her waist was only 25 inches! Hopefully someone can appreciate and use this dress form.

Longchamp real or fake?

I'm a fan of Longchamp bags because they're practical and don't cost an arm and a leg.  As I was talking to the handbag person at the thrift store a Longchamp bag came in. She just glanced at it and said it was a knock off. I thought I would do a deep dive to see if it was really or a knock off.

1) The handle looks like leather but it has a cord in it to keep it rounded. True Longchamp bag handles are just folded over. The edges are dyed black which is done on fakes.

2) The logo is heavily embossed, so much so it will also show up on the reverse side. It's not always 100% but there should be a little showing, if not it's a fake.

3) I couldn't find this color on the official color chart but colors aren't always clear online.

4) Longchamp stamps the name of the bag and where it was made.  There's a circumflex (yes I had to look up what that thingy was called) over the e. It very hard to see but it should be there.

There were a few other things to prove it's a fake but to me it still looks good. It was priced for only $7.00 because it was a knock off.  I plan to use it as toiletry bag since I now use a water pik and electric tooth brush which takes up a lot of room in my  average size toiletry bag.

Antique Tansu Sewing Box

Antique Sewing Tansu
Every now and then something super special comes into the store. When this small tansu came in, I didn't know what it was as we were very busy so I put it aside to check out later. During intake of donations it gets a little crazy. Tansu cabinets normally have some type of damage because the wood is very light. When I finally had the time to check it out I was so surprised when I lifted the lid and the pin cushion popped up. It was a debate how we would display it as it can't handle customers "playing" with it and it's too tall to fit into our locked cabinets. So now it just sits waiting for space to open up some place safe.

Googly Eyes For the Win

While I have access to a large dining room table (staying at a friend's house) I've been busy making cards. I think I have another 75 to mail out this week! I've been looking for diamond glaze to make the eyes pop but with limited crafting stores around haven't been able to find it. So when I found a miscellaneous bag for googly eyes, decided to just go for it. I think it's funny but not sure how the church going folks in Ohio will feel about it. My friend asked specifically for more happy birthday and get well cards. Normally I don't add any sentiments to my cards making them an all occasion type of card. So what do you think of the big eyes?

When art just speaks to ou.

This came in the other day and it just spoke to me.

I'm staying at my friend's house while they're gone so I feed the birds. They have a really big backyard that gets a lot of wild life attention. The crows are my favorite. It started when I would trap gophers and rats. The crows would carry everything I caught away. Once you get an established pair of crows, they will wait for you every morning. Once a family of crows claims your house the other crows will stay away, it's a territorial thing.  Haven't had any luck trapping any rodents so I feed them dried meal worms and toasted bread.

I thought this ceramic piece would make a great thank you gift for my friends as they also like the crows. What do you think?

Crafting Space

A few months ago I sent off 75 cards (mostly Iris folding cards) to an online friend for her church support group. They set up a card shop in memory of a member who had passed away. The money raised helps keeps the support group going.

I know she really wanted birthday and get well cards but I sent what I had a lot of. Crazy that I had that many iris folding cards made and still didn't make a dent in my back stock. I even sold 21 of those cards last week (at a big discount) to a teacher for her graduating class of teachers and my rack is still full.

Every place I've gone to over the past few years, I take card making supplies with me. Most of the time I only get parts done (and I have a lot of parts) and rarely finished a full card. While staying at a friend's house this month, I now have the space to spread out. I'm really trying to focus on the theme she wants. It's so nice to have the space that I can just walk into and be creative for a few minutes or hours when the mood strikes me. I'm working with what I have easy access to as all of my craft supplies are packed away in different boxes.

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner - Who is your mentor or hero?

Who is your mentor or hero?

Of course my mom. She was a super good cook and set the example food doesn't have to be fancy to be good. How to cook fast with what you have was a must. Of course living on a vegetable farm, we had all the building blocks.  I'm still a big fan of salad and raw vegetables.

When I was a child I loved to watch Julia Child on PBS. It was the only time I was quiet let alone inside the house. I spent most of childhood running around outside and only came into to eat or sleep.  I loved the show!  The best parts of  Julia's  show was when she made a mistake or dropped food on the floor and said no one will know. :)

I collect The Art of French Cooking first editions just because I can. :)

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner - How do conversations about food inspire you?

How do conversations about food inspire you?

I don't have many friends who are foodies. Cooking isn't something they like to do. Most of my food conversations are about restaurants or bakeries they've been to. I don't go out to eat very often because it's just to $$$ now days. I understand costs have gone up for everyone but I just can't justify spending $$$ on a meal that I know I can cook for far less. When I do go out to eat my gluten issue comes into play as well. What inspires me is can I make the same dish at home. The last place I went to was a Mexican restaurant in Los Gatos called Andale. The Monday group of volunteers go out once a month to someplace close to the store. I had grilled steak tacos - $18.00 for two. It was very good but it was the conversation that made it worth it. Our waiter lost his voice so it was more sign language when we had to order.

Baking up a storm while I can.

I finally used up the last of the Costco size brownie mix I got when the kids came to visit.  Since I have access to a nice big kitchen and electric oven, I went for it. At my small place I have a gas stove with no ventilation to the outside. I didn't know that was legal!

I also made some banana bread since I had the oven on and tons of bananas sitting on the counter. I use to make banana bread all the time for Mees when he was little. I couldn't find my original recipes (it's packed away somewhere) so I'm experimenting with some new ones. This recipe was a fail but a big part was I didn't melt the butter before hand. For some reason it never blended/creamed in with the sugar and eggs.

Estate Sale

I don't go to many estate sales by the local auction company called Silver Leaf. The prices are just way too high for a reseller. They do a very good job on setting up the house for the sale which I know takes a lot of time and staff to do.

This person was an artist (painting and jewelry) so I decided to stop by since I was in the area. It was the second day of the sale which means all the good stuff would be gone. The first day is the best time if you really want something. The third day of the sale is when they are willing to discount what is left but even knowing that there wasn't anything I was interested in.

I saw in the pictures the auction sent out before the sale this metal thingy in the center. I know it's use in jewelry making  and thought it might be helpful in a class I'm working on. If it was still there on the second day I would pick it up. Of course it wasn't but I still looked through everything just to make sure. They had some lovely paintings but with everything I have in all boxed up, didn't think I should pick up anything new.

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner - What do you think of as comforting or healing food?

Question of the day. What do you think of as comforting or healing food?

My go to comforting food is Japanese fried rice. I don't make it too often anymore since it's only me. It's something we have almost every morning when my family gets together at the beach house. Great way to use up all the leftovers (if there are any) from the dinner the night before. Everyone likes it no matter who makes it or what's in it.

My healing food has to be honey and lemon. Lemons pretty much grow year round here in California so access is easy. The honey is local too as a good friend is a bee keeper. She has a lovely garden with chickens and bee hives. When I'm really sick I ask for the dark fall honey. It has more of the good stuff as the bees had more access to a big variety of plants. It has a stronger taste so not for everyone.

The Evil Eye Protection

I've seen this symbol/design many times especially from people who travel a lot. I knew it was called an evil eye, which doesn't sound like that would be a good thing. :)

The Evil Eye
Last year while dog sitting, the owner had one so I decided to look up the true meaning behind it - yes I was very bored. The symbol is to help protect or ward off an evil eye curse.  So when one came into the store I added it to my vest. I feel like there's a black cloud hanging over me with a whole lot of negative energy. I usually would go spend time at the beach but the house isn't available this month. :(  Let's see if this charm works

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner - What is your favorite part of the cooking process?

Another question that I had to narrow down to just one thing. I think it's the process of prepping for dinner. I like to have everything ready before cooking. Chopping up the onions, mushrooms, smash the garlic etc... If it's a new recipes, I'll put all the spices I will need in little dishes. :)

OK so why the all the banana peels? I like to make a fruit smoothie every morning. It's like how other people carry around their coffee all day, I carry around my smoothie. An elder customer brings in almost expired food from Safeway. Not sure how that is legal or how safe it is but I go with it. ]  I always shout, "the banana dealer is here" and all the other volunteers run out to the parking lot to see what she has. I never know when the bananas will come in so when they do I stock up and freeze them. :)

Tim Holtz Stamp Platform

Several years ago there was a lot of drama over stamp positioners.  The company that makes the MISTI sued everyone under the sun (even DYI crafters who posted homemade ones) when they got a patient for their stamping platform. Even before the lawsuits happened, I borrowed one from a friend and didn't really like it. The price point is extremely high which was another negative in my book. When I heard that Tonics (Tim) lost the lawsuit and it could no long be sold in the US, I went out and brought three. Buying three cost the same as one of the MISTI. I'm soooo happy that I did! I find Tim's platforms are better made, much easier to use and far more versatile. I do have a MISTI (must have been given to me) but I rarely use it.

Why We CooK by Lindsay Gardner - What Season Makes You Most Excited to Cook?

What Season Makes Most Excited to Cook ?

Living in California we don't really have "seasons" so I'm going with early summer. Produce is grown almost year round here so early summer is when it really hits the stores. Barbecuing has always been my favorite cooking method since it's all done outside. Making  fresh green salads (I'm a big salad fan) with all the toppings as a side. Growing up on a farm (we grew vegetables, not cows) I really only knew fresh vegetables. I really don't think I ever ate anything from a can growing up. Coming from a big family canned anything would have been to expensive.

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner - What is your favorite ingredient?

What is your favorite ingredient?

If that means what one ingredient do I use all the time it would have to be black pepper. I love it on everything and it goes into every dish I make. I do like the mushroom umami from Trader Joe's and red pepper flakes so I guess they could be a runner ups.

Fresh lemons and honey is my go to pick me up but I guess that would fall into beverages. :)

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner - Question #3

What is your most treasured kitchen object?

Sorry no pictures as everything is packed up waiting for my move.

I had to think about this. Picking something I treasure because I know I can never replace it? Something that invokes a strong emotion or memory?  I can only pick one thing so here's my list of candidates.

My vintage (well it's vintage now) green Tupperware stacking measuring cups. I cried when I found them, thinking they got sold off  during the big purge when I got divorced. They're avocado green, so you know how old they are.

Another vintage item, my little rice cooker. It's over 40 years old and it's a no frilly. Cooks Japanese rice super fast. Really makes me feel at home when I use it. I just love the load click when it's done. If you have one you know what I mean. :)

My Grandmother gave me a dinner set over 45 years ago. Always reminds me of her. I've never seen another set in all my years of thrifting. I only have the dinner plates now and have no idea where the other pieces went.

I think I will go with the measuring cups. My mom was all in with the avocado green when we moved into the suburbs from the farm. Always makes me think of her kitchen and what a good cook she was.

Why We Cook - Overcoming Creative Rut in Cooking

Second question from "Why We Cook"
How do you overcome creative ruts?

For me it's trying something new. When I go grocery shopping I always try and pick up something I haven't tried before. I usually do this at Costco because I've tried almost everything at Trader Joe's. :)

I don't have the taste buds of alcohol but I do like the fancy glasses that are sometimes used. I do have two huge bottles of vodka I picked at an estate sale. They legally can't sell any food products, so they just give it away. I have plans to make vanilla extract again so this was the only reason I picked up the bottles. I looked up what to do with vodka other than making extract. I came across Moscow Mule, vodka, ginger beer & lime. I know you're suppose to serve it in copper mugs but I never knew why, another rabbit hole. The copper is suppose to enhance the drink while keeping it cold but I still think it's marketing thing.  Ginger beer isn't a "beer" which lead me down yet another rabbit hole to find out what is was. All of its ingredients are things I like so I picked up a box at Costco. I'm currently staying at a friend's house that has a very nice lime tree and copper mugs. The cooking stars were all in line! I have all the parts to make a MM. Then I thought since I don't like alcohol, I would leave that part out and make it a mocktail. The word is still out if the copper mug makes any difference.

So how do you overcome a creative rut?

What do you cook when you're exhausted? What do you when your enegized?

Alton Brown Grilled Pork Tenderloin
My go to "I'm too tired to cook" is gluten free fusilli pasta with bacon, garlic, onions, mushrooms and cheese. While the pasta is cooking (gluten free pasta takes longer) I sauté up everything and top with freshly grated cheese.

When I have a lot of energy I'll tackle one of the many recipes I have flagged in my cookbooks. I'll also make a dessert.  :)

Tonight I'm making Alton Brown's marinated grilled pork tenderloin. It takes 24 hours to marinate so it's something that has to be planned ahead. Another one of my go to dishes is lasagna. I freeze most of it for a quick meal when I'm not up cooking.

Why We Cook by Lindsay Gardner & Tasting History by Max Miller

If you follow my blog you know I like to read cookbooks. I watched a few Youtube videos by Max Miller which are interesting. I thought I would check out his cookbook, Tasting History at the library.

On the same shelf was the book by Lindsay Gardner, "Why We Cook Women On Food, Identity & Connection".  What caught my eye was the homey for lack of a better term watercolor illustrations. Since it was raining and not wanting to lug a ton of books out to the car, I went to the quiet room to see if any of the books were worth the effort.

Tasting History was just OK, rather boring. His videos are much better.  Why We Cook on the other hand was written in a style I really like. It flows easily and a book you could open to any page and find something interesting to read. It's has questions they asked the chefs and it makes you wonder how you would answer those questions. I think while I have a wifi connection for the next few weeks, I'll post my answer to one of those questions everyday.

What kitchen tools do you love most? A good knife and my cast iron pan are my essentials.  I use my Nutribullet blender everyday and my pour over coffee set up but it's more a "like" than a must have. What's yours?

Truck load of fabric

The store doesn't get a lot of crafting stuff in but when we do, it's always a truck load. This donation was from a quilter who can no longer quilt. She donated all and I mean all of her fabric. Most are fat quarters and done quilt tops. She was very organized and had all the boxes label by theme and color. There are more boxes on the floor that aren't in the picture. I took the picture so the volunteer who is in charge of fabric could decide when and how  she was going to process it all. She came in and took everything home to price while watching the Super Bowl game.

Ripple water feature

Now that I don't have wifi at home, I can't post as often. I'm at the store a lot but usually too busy to sit down with my laptop.

While I was down in Carmel I just love to walk the beach during low tide. I especially like when the ocean does this around the rocks. I my fantasy garden I would love to have a water feature that makes this ripple effect. It's it too cool?

Raspberry Muffin - Sweet Rhea

When I was at the Carmel house I stopped by Sweet Rhea cookie shop. I found out they only do gluten free cookies on Friday. :( So I went for a raspberry muffin, which was really good. $3.50. I also tried the Mexican chocolate cookie which was also very good. It had a hint of cinnamon which was a nice touch. On another day they had coconut, macadamia and pineapple muffin but I'm not a fan of coconut flakes so I passed. :(   One thing I like about the shop is they change up their specialty cookies / muffins everyday. Their muffin base is very good so no matter what they add it will be good.  I just don't like the texture of coconut flakes.

Fire Alarm Chicken Soup

May not look pretty
I've been wanting to make a chicken bean soup for a while now. Normally (well the way my daughter makes her soup) the soup is blended before adding the chicken. I forgot that about that part (I like chunky soups) when I added the black beans and celery, which I didn't want to blend.

The reason I call this Fire Alarm Chicken Soup is because I set off the smoke detectors. I roasted the chicken, garlic and jalapeño peppers and when I opened the oven door, I needed a second pot holder.  The few seconds it took me to grab another pot holder was enough to smoke up the house.  I added a lot of spices to the soup and I think it turned out super!

Vintage Glass Vase

I went the one of the thrift store that's out in the middle of no where and right next to the Monterey dump. Last Chance Mercantile benefits homeless veterans. They don't have much but what they do have is usually very over priced so I don't shop there too often. What they do get (sometimes) is estate artwork by local artists. With the weather being so nice and I'm suppose to be on an art retreat, I decide to make the drive. I mean looking at artwork counts, right?

While I was there some women were looking at this glass vase. One making a comment it was vintage (which it is) and maybe there other friend would like it. I could tell even from a distance that it had a purple tint, meaning it was made with uranium. It does glow but it's not super bright. It was on the rack with the all the cheap glass vases and marked for only $5, so I picked it up. I walked right passed it an would not have even seen it if I didn't hear the ladies talking about it. :)

I also found a pyrex baking dish for $5. I'm slowly replacing all my  lower case Pyrex baking pans with the old ones that have all capital letters. The new ones (lower case) can shatter if exposed to high oven heat. I've been waiting for some to come into the store but so far no luck.

Card Donation

Before the pandemic I donated cards to an online card maker friend who started a card rack at her church in memory of a friend who passed away. The money supports one of the outreach program they both were involved in at the church. I wasn't sure if it was a program still going until Susan posting asking for more cards. Last week I sent off 75 cards which didn't even make a dent in the cards I have for sale at CCB. Even I was surprised how many cards I had!

I plan to send one more box once I'm back home and have time to get my extra cards put in clear shelves.

Trying to get in the creative groove.

Since I'm suppose to be here at the beach house for an art retreat, I found this book at my favorite thrifty bookstore for $2.  Thought it was appropriate for those times when I'm just sitting around not doing anything, which is most of the time. :)

I did stop by the Safeway thinking maybe they have fresh crabs. I heard they're now in season around here. They didn't look too good so I asked the butcher if they were fresh. He gave it a really good sniff and said, it's gone south. I thanked him for his honest opinion and just brought popcorn.

Low Tide and Crafting.

Little Sandpipers at low tide
I couldn't decide if I should spend the money and come back down to the Carmel house. The super low tides are happening in the afternoon, which is my favorite time to walk the beach. I went back and forth about it when I decided to call my trip a crafting getaway. This was something I would pay for back in the day.  I loaded up my some of my art supplies and plan to do some rock and water coloring painting. I have to say it was a perfect day to walk the beach and get my 10,000 steps in less than an hour. :) It's also the big golf tournament (don't know which one since I don't golf) at Pebble Beach so I'm guessing it will be crowded in town all week.

Lasagna Finally

Not the best photo but I've been wanting to make a gluten free lasagna for a while now. With everything packed away it's been challenging. I was hoping a pyrex pan would come into the store but no luck so far. I'm house sitting, really it's more a retreat away from my tiny place. My friends are gone for about a month and I have full access to their house. They have a wonderful kitchen so no more excuses in not making a full size pan. Most of it will go into the freezer as part of my meal prep plan. Next up is my sewing projects. :)

Lucite Candles Worth It?

Lucite candles are a thing in the resale market. Don't ask we why, I think it's right up there with plastic fruit. The candles (copper flakes) and copper candle holder came into the store this past week. It's the first time I've seen a pair in the wild. There was a debate on pricing it. I voted (insisted) we go almost full retail at $75.00 as all the big Youtube resellers go crazy when they find the candles. So I'll test the theory they know what they're talking about.

Pin Cushion Workshop

Went to a pin cushion workshop at FabMo today. It was so much fun as we had access to a warehouse of fabric! A variety of containers were provided and after the first test run using cotton fabric it was game on. I liked the look of velvet but it was a little too thick but I went with it anyways.  The linen and silk were easier to work and with all the samples there was no limit to how creative you could get. My container was on the big side so I could use bigger prints. My project looked like a royal crown when I added a lace doily and some pearls. :)

Beach Time

Where I find peace is walking on a quiet beach looking for treasures. Maybe it's all the negative ions floating around but it's my happy place.
While the boys were here we collected a lot of beach treasures, mainly rocks. I started make dioramas and Christmas ornaments.
Now that I'm back home I have to decide what to do with all the "treasures" I have.
I think I will need some more beach time to help my creative mojo to kick in.

With patience I can find almost anything.

Patience isn't a virtue of mine but I've learned I will always find what I'm looking if I'm patience.  When people ask me to look for something, I always say I will find it at some point if they can wait. I'm now being super patience looking for a new place to live.

I follow a watercolor artist on Youtube and she said "the artist way" was a must have book. I asked the book person at the HD to keep an eye out for me. It's an old book and I think I had a copy years ago. Anyways, a few hours later the very last book she took out of a box of donation was "the artist way"!  It's a very old copy with the paper all yellow but that means it was free. Now I'm looking for "writing down the bones" which people think inspired the artist way's author.
